KEARSARGE/LAKE SUNAPEE HOUSING COALITION
MISSION STATEMENT
The Kearsarge/Lake Sunapee Housing Coalition promotes an
increased supply of workforce housing in the region
KLSHC serves the following communities: Bradford, Newbury,
New London, Springfield, Sunapee, Sutton, Warner and Wilmot
Vision Statement
"We recognize the impact the housing shortage has on the quality of life and the regional economy. The Coalition embraces the need for more workforce housing ….including affordable housing, market-rate housing and mixed-income housing. By working regionally across jurisdictions and in partnership, the Coalition seeks to ensure adequate housing opportunities are available in our area villages and towns."
To implement this vision the Coalition has formed itself into several Action Groups to increase the supply of workforce housing….the Steering Committee, Community Outreach, Financial Support and Land Use and Zoning.
What is Workforce Housing? and who needs it?
Workforce Housing includes a variety of housing types suitable for households with different needs and income levels. It includes affordable housing, market-rate housing, and mixed-income housing for retirees, teachers, retail and service sector employees, firefighters, policemen, secretaries, and nurses among others, all essential community employees. The types of housing include starter homes, townhouse, condominiums, apartments and co-housing.
A typical low-income household earning $36,000 per year could afford a two-bedroom apartment renting for $1,000 a month including utilities, or purchasing a housing unit of $150,000 maximum, requiring payments of $1,000 per month, which is the acceptable 1/3 of income.
